Response Characteristics of the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System and Implications for Specification and Prediction

The successful assimilation of data into physics-based Ionosphere-Thermosphere (I-T) models requires rethinking the established filtering techniques employed in fields such as tropospheric weather modeling. Within the highly driven I-T system, estimation of the incompletely observed heating and forcing inputs is a necessary component of any reliable data assimilation technique. How best to estimate and apply these drivers, however, remains an open question and active area of research. This talk will give an overview of recently developed data assimilation methods designed to accommodate the response characteristics of the I-T system while highlighting challenges, recent accomplishments, and expectations for improving I-T forecasting capabilities.
