Stormtime Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere Coupling

The magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system is greatly perturbed during geomagnetic storms. This results in the emergence of physical feedback loops that provide stronger coupling across different spatial and temporal scales between system elements. For instance, intensified convective electric fields generated by the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction can trigger the microscopic ionospheric turbulence in the electrojet regions, and shape polar ionosphere structures by transporting plasmas from middle latitudes into high latitudes to generate storm-enhanced density (SED) and tongue of ionization (TOI). In this talk, utilizing multiple databases (GPS TEC, ionosonde, AMPERE, SuperDARN, and ISR) and a state-of-the-art coupled geospace model (LTR), which combines LFM global magnetosphere model, TIEGCM and the Rice Convection Model (RCM), I will discuss the following topics: (1) assessment of the microscopic ionosphere turbulence effects on the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system; (2) the morphology and formation mechanisms of storm-enhanced density and tongue of ionization; and (3) IMF By effects on the ionosphere-thermosphere.
