HiWIND team, Kiruna, Sweden
June 29, 2018

Finally, after repeated postponements due to unfavorable weather conditions, HiWind launched from Esrange Space Center, Kiruna, Sweden, on Sunday, 24 June. The HiWIND team arrived early May 2018. During May, they assembled the gondola and mounted numerous specialized instrumentation in preparation for a June launch.

Hanli Liu-CEDAR Prize Lecture

Hanli Liu gave the CEDAR Prize Lecture on Thursday, June 28th, at the CEDAR Summer Workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Prize Lecture was awarded in recognition of the work accomplished on the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model–eXtended (WACCM-X) and the paper describing it that was recently published in the Journal of Advances in Modeling of Earth Systems.

In February, 2018, a specialized engineering team, led by principal investigator Dr. Qian Wu, traveled from Boulder, Colorado to a NASA facility in Palestine, Texas. The team spent two weeks working with NASA colleagues performing compatibility testing between the HiWIND electrical systems and the NASA balloon command and control communications systems.

During his thesis work at HAO, Newkirk Fellow Ricky Egeland developed a solar-stellar database called sunstardb. The "solar-stellar connection" began as a relatively small field of research focused on understanding the processes that generate magnetic field in stars and sometimes lead to a cyclic pattern of long-term variability in activity, similar to the one demonstrated by our Sun.

SES-14 communications satellite

The NASA Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission was launched into orbit on January 25, 2018 as a commercially hosted payload on the SES-14 communications satellite. There were anxious moments following lift-off when mission control lost contact with the satellite.
