Maura Hagan, HAO/NCAR emerita, is among 100 U.S. scientists and 25 international associates elected this year to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the world’s premier academic institutions. Forty percent of the newly elected members are women—the most ever elected in any one year to date.

A team of scientists has, for the first time, used a single, cohesive computer model to simulate the entire life cycle of a solar flare. The comprehensive new simulation captures the formation of a solar flare in a more realistic way than previous efforts, and it includes the spectrum of light emissions known to be associated with flares.
