Pedatella</strong></em></p> <p>Previous studies have demonstrated that the diurnal variability of water vapor in the mesosphere involves a non-linear interplay between dynamics, photochemistry, and catalytic processes. The inherent difficulty in measurement of winds and water vapor in this region makes the study of mesospheric water vapor complex. Here we study the sources of diurnal variability of water vapor in the mesosphere with the help of the specified dynamics configuration of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere-ionosphere eXtension (SD-WACCM-X) for typical equinox conditions during the solar minimum year 2009. Special emphasis is given to the advective transport by the migrating diurnal tide and its impact on the mean water vapor in the mesosphere. To isolate the contribution from advective and non-advective processes, a Lagrangian parcel trajectory model is employed. Our results indicate that the vertical tidal advection dominates the transport of water vapor in the upper mesosphere and that there is a significant contribution from horizontal tidal advection below 70km. Among non-advective processes, chemical loss of water vapor has the largest contribution. This proof-of-concept is further extended using the recently released version 2.07 of water vapor observations from the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument and dynamical tides from the empirical Climatological Tidal Model for the Thermosphere (CTMT). All radars work by reflecting radio waves off a target and measuring the returned signal. For atmospheric radars the target is free electrons within the plasma in the upper atmosphere. Since the free electrons are typically a disordered gas the radio waves are reflected in random directions. This means some process is needed to create a coherent structure in the plasma for the radio waves to strongly reflect back in the direction of the radar. In this paper we show that the region between 130-170 km in the upper atmosphere is likely to create and maintain a specific set of plasma waves that act as a coherent structure for radar measurements. We show that predictions of where the plasma waves are generated match well with the observed patterns of these “150 km echoes”. This is the first research to provide a specific explanation for what causes 150 km echoes. In understanding this cause, we learned more about the Sun’s influence on our upper atmosphere while expanding the capabilities of atmospheric radars.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div development of whole atmosphere models that extend from the surface to the upper thermosphere represents a significant advance in modeling capabilities of the ionosphere-thermosphere. Whole atmosphere models have had an especially important influence on understanding the role of terrestrial weather on generating variability in the ionosphere-thermosphere. This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivations and contributions made by whole atmosphere modeling. The results illustrate that the LCSs tend to provide a barrier for the water vapor plume generated by the space shuttle.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs), indicating regions of material transport, are derived from models of the lower thermosphere for five space shuttle water vapor plume events. LCSs defined using flow fields from the Specified Dynamics version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere eXtension (SD-WACCMX) are compared to global ultraviolet imager (GUVI) observations of water vapor documented in the literature. Tracer distributions and LCS locations largely agree with GUVI data for spring, summer, and winter. For a fall season event, SD-WACCMX predicts an LCS ridge to produce spreading not found in the observations. To understand the dependence of the location of LCSs on the method for constraining the model meteorology, for a shuttle plume event for which SD-WACCMX and data assimilative WACCM-X (WACCMX-DART) model outputs are both available, the global LCSs are compared. There are significant differences in the modeled LCSs at a geometric altitude of 109 km. Low-pass filtering the zonal and meridional winds with a Fourier series of up to zonal wavenumber 6 smooths out differences between models but does not eliminate the most significant LCS differences. There is improved inter-model agreement at a lower height of 60 km. The LCS method represents a novel approach in how to analyze material transport in the atmosphere, but should be used carefully with models of the lower thermosphere.</p> <p> </p> </div> </div> </div> The observations show a distinctly diurnal structure in local time, while all the model results indicate a semidiurnal structure.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>This paper compares new observations from the Global-scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission of molecular oxygen (O2) in the lower thermosphere (130 - 200 km in altitude) to widely used models in the aeronomy community. The main finding is that the local time structure of the observed molecular oxygen has a minimum at 6 hours local time and a peak near 18 hours local time while the models all show a structure that has peaks at both 6 and 18 hours local time. This significant difference not only influences the total neutral thermospheric density results from the models, but may ultimately impact the calculated ionospheric plasma density and its temporal variability. Understanding ionospheric plasma densities is vital for the proper modeling of the propagation of communications and navigational signals.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div From the second to fourth columns are the difference of NmF2 between OSSE-MIGHTI-ELF, OSSE-MIGHTI-GC, and OSSE-GC and NR.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>The upward plasma drift and equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) in the Earth's ionosphere are strongly influenced by the zonal electric field, which is generated by the wind dynamo. Specification and forecasting of thermospheric winds thus plays an important role in ionospheric weather prediction. In this study, we assess the impact of assimilating thermospheric wind observations from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument on NASA's Ionospheric CONnection (ICON) explorer satellite on the ionospheric electrodynamics. Empirical Localization Functions (ELFs) of ICON/MIGHTI zonal and meridional winds are also computed and applied to our data assimilation experiments, enabling improved assimilation of the ICON/MIGHTI wind observations. A set of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) are performed using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere-ionosphere eXtension (WACCMX) with data assimilation provided by the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) ensemble adjustment Kalman filter. The results show that assimilating the ICON/MIGHTI wind observations with the ELF improves the zonal and meridional wind root mean square error (RMSE) by 16-18% and 7-10%, respectively. The improved wind specification further improves the low-latitude ExB vertical drift RMSE by about 18%. The response of electron densities is slower, and the overall impact is smaller. The improvement of the ionosphere F-region maximum electron density (NmF2) between -45 to 45 degree is about 8% after 18 days of data assimilation.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div the high latitudes of the winter middle atmosphere to the tropics and the middle and high latitudes of the summer hemisphere.</p> <figure class="align-left media media--type-image The numbers in parentheses show the number of months contributing to the average.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>Analysis of monthly and daily output covering 195 simulation years indicates that the response in the summer middle and high latitudes has a weak overall magnitude of a few Kelvin or less in temperature but has a repeatable pattern whose structure and phase agree with observational studies. Lag correlation indicates that perturbations in wave activity in the winter stratosphere, as quantified by EP flux divergence, are accompanied by perturbations in the transformed Eulerian mean meridional wind extending into the summer hemisphere. There is not an appreciable correlation with momentum forcing in the summer hemisphere by either resolved waves or parameterized gravity waves. The rapid circulation response and the lack of a wave response in the summer hemisphere suggest that the interhemispheric coupling that is simulated in WACCM6 in both the stratosphere and mesosphere owes its existence to a circulation that develops to restore balance to the zonally averaged state of the atmosphere. This is an alternative explanation for the coupling from the winter stratosphere to the summer mesosphere; previous studies have assumed a necessary role for wave activity in the summer between lower and upper atmosphere during SSWs. Below this value, the difference and percentage difference values are shaded in white in (e) and (f), respectively.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>Much of the upper atmospheric variability associated with SSWs is known to be driven by large changes in the vertically propagating semidiurnal migrating (SW2) and non-migrating (SW1 and SW3) solar tides. In this study, we investigate the effect of stratospheric ozone variability during SSWs on these solar tides. For this purpose, a case study of the 2009 SSW event is carried out using WACCM with two distinct simulation setups. In the first setup, the ozone concentrations are interactively calculated in the model and resemble the ozone observations during the 2009 SSW event while in the second setup, the ozone concentrations are specified using zonal mean values. We constrain both of the simulations to the MERRA-2 renanalysis so that the background atmosphere through which the solar tides propagate are almost identical in each case. Following the onset of the SSW, we find that in the vicinity of the peak enhancements of SW1, SW2 and SW3 in the MLT, the amplitudes of these semidiurnal solar tides to be approximately about 15-50% larger for the simulation with interactive ozone as compared to the one with prescribed ozone, indicating that the stratospheric ozone variability plays an important role in driving semidiurnal solar Specification and forecasting of the upper atmosphere are critical for mitigating these effects. The results demonstrate the significant reduction in RMSE and bias when assimilating ionosphere observations.</p> </figcaption> </figure> <p>Data assimilation, which statistically combines a background model with observations, has recently been adopted as a means to improve upper atmosphere specification and forecasting. However, data assimilation systems focused on the upper atmosphere typically have lower boundaries near 100 km, and they do not consider the variability in wave forcing that originates at lower altitudes. This represents a limitation due to the known importance of lower atmosphere forcing on the day-to-day variability of the ionosphere. The current study presents initial results of the assimilation of ionosphere observations in a whole atmosphere model that extends from the surface to ~500-700 km. The model is based on the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere-ionosphere eXtension (WACCMX) with data assimilation provided by the Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) ensemble Kalman filter. The results demonstrate the positive impact of assimilating ionosphere observations on both short-term forecasts and analysis fields. This represents the first demonstration of a data assimilation system capable of assimilating observations from throughout the entire atmosphere (0-500 km).</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div
