I will discuss the constraints that observations place on the solar dynamo. The talk will begin with a discussion of the toroidal flux budget, and the crucial role of the polar fields, then turn to the surface poloidal flux budget which is driven by Joy’s law. We will show that observations imply that Joy’s law sets in due to surface flows during the emergence process. We will relate these processes and observations to similar processes which act in an ASH simulation.
